As usual, the subject of civilisation's imminent collapse draws me like a moth to the flame. Last week after reading an article in the Guardian on the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I started doing some checking into the Dark Mountain Project.Co-founded by Paul Kingsnorth (One No, Many Yeses), it's first offering is a collection of writings which propose as statement of fact that mankind's current free fall into oblivion is already past the point of return.
The project manifesto is militant and matter of fact, as if they know the planet is about to fart us off into space at any minute.. Hopefully they'll have enough time to say 'I told you so' before we go.
There will be a Project gathering in Wales later this month.. We'll soon find out if they're serious.
Personally, I think the only hope we had was Bill Drummond's failed attempt to balance world vugum by placing an effigy of Elvis at the summit of Everest. Maybe it could still work, but with much stronger medicine.. I'm thinking this Kev Hopper track, Jimmy Savile's jewellery and the severed head of Madonna.
